LED is an electronic component which emits light under the influence of electric current flowing through it. Various producers of LEDs, among other types, offer four most popular ones: SMD, Epistar, CREE and OSRAM.
Here are some of the differences between them:
- SMD is a LED type which is installed directly on the board.
- Whereas, Epistar, CREE and OSRAM produce LEDs of various types, such as: SMD, COB (chip-on-board), High Power LED or MCOB (multiple chip-on-board).
- Epistar and CREE are regarded as the leaders in the production of LEDs of high quality and efficiency. Thus, they are used in locations with high requirements, for instance, in street lighting, industrial lamps and vehicle lamps.
- OSRAM is a German producer which also offers high quality LEDs but it focuses more on the market of household and automotive lighting.
- SMD LEDs have lower efficiency than High Power LEDs, COB and MCOB; yet, they are cheaper and easier to install.
All in all, SMD LEDs are a less expensive and more popular choice, and Epistar, CREE and OSRAM offer LEDs of high quality and efficiency, which makes them a better option for professional use.
